According to media reports, as April and May enter the long contract signing season for European and American routes, spot market freight rates have skyrocketed. Recently, freight giants such as Maersk and DaFei have also announced increases in freight rates, and the trend of low freight rates may gradually be reversed. At the same time, the shipping company is continuing to reduce class control cabins, with the three major alliances accounting for 90% of the cancelled voyages.
On April 11th, Maersk issued a notice to customers stating that in order to better respond to demand fluctuations, Maersk will cancel the MSC ARIES/318N voyage on the TP2 route. The goods will be received by TP6 Maersk Evora 318N and TP8 Maersk ntares 319N.
Previously, the 2M Alliance announced the cancellation of the TP6/Pearl and TP2/Jaguar voyages departing from China on April 13th and 21st, respectively. Due to the cancellation of consecutive flights, some routes' flights have been cancelled, resulting in service suspension. For example, the AE1/Shogun Loop Line, one of the six Asia Europe routes of the 2M Alliance, was permanently suspended.
According to the latest data from Deloitte, out of a total of 675 scheduled voyages on major trade routes across the Pacific, Atlantic, and Asia to Northern Europe and the Mediterranean, 51 voyages were cancelled between the 15th week (April 10-16) and the 19th week (May 8-14), with a cancellation rate of 8%.
During this period, 51% of the shutdowns occurred on the Trans Pacific Eastbound route, 45% on the Asia to Nordic and Mediterranean routes, and 4% on the Trans Atlantic Westbound trade route.
In the next five weeks, THE Alliance has announced the cancellation of up to 25 voyages, followed by Ocean Alliance and 2M Alliance, with 16 voyages and 6 voyages cancelled, respectively. During the same period, the non shipping alliance implemented four closures. Meanwhile, Drury predicts that spot prices on the East West route will stabilize in the coming weeks, except for the transatlantic route.
